Disc Breaks with Llupa ft. Maxim Hix & Under This - 319 - 18th December 2014

After missing last weeks show as not eel, this week I have 2 guests for you Maxim Hix and Under This - both a re HUGe in their own way...

Maxim Hix - Interview

1.For the people who dont know who you are, who are you, where are you from ?

My name is Maxim Pahanov – I’m from Moscow - Russia. I was born in an ordinary family where the mother was typist and father worked as an engineer . Nobody of my family was involved in music. Moreover in teen I loved predominantly Russian rock and pop music – so it seems strange for musician with deep electronic direction.
All had changed when I met Scooter group from Germany with their unbelievable, amazing sound. It happened in the age of 18. It turned all my imagination about electronic sound. I started to track all their releases, started to find a similar sound (in the middle of 90s in our country was popular happy hardcore underground style).
Meantime a special electronic radio station started to broadcast in Moscow.

I switched my interests to the radio and immersed into the deep sound of electronic music. Primary I was in love with Trance and Progressive. In 2000 I encountered with a CD in the shop which had been dedicated to the creation music – it called Dance eJay. In short this software allowed to connect different parts of samples with each other. So that time I thought how simple can be created music )) All has changed when a friend of mine gave me a link to the Orion Pro v.2 software. That was very difficult to create something in this program since I had to plug in several VSTi synths. I had no music background education and I thought that the time to change it. I entered in the music school in the age of 21 and had been studying in piano section for a year. I had learned to distinguish different notes, I bought a real synthezator Yamaha DGX-200 and tried hard with it, I started to be a member of CJCITY.RU website dedicated to all young artists and producers. Finally I had made several tracks in Trance style and they were warmly accepted at the site by other musicians. I started to obtain different offers to play as a DJ in the night clubs. Very soon DJ work became a main my profession and I gave up to create tracks for a while. I tried myself in promotion, creating different parties in the Moscow area, bring foreign artists to the Moscow dance floor. That was cool time.

But the world was changing very fast and DJ profession in our country without making your own tracks became useless. Nobody wanted to make a deal with ordinary DJs. Everyone could make a mix of tracks using different software. So I started to create a track per year, tried to press out something from my mind. My last track was written in Reason 4 in 2007. Then I gave up all things which ever connected me with music. I became an ordinary listener… got a job in software protection company, got a good position of sales manager. It seemed all is okay…but something inside me wasn’t giving me a comfort from this life …
A year ago this “something” said me: Max you are dealing with bullshit, you can’t control what is just hid inside you.
It’s insane but I visited a special training course for young producers and musicians and it gave me a powerful of cheerfulness.

I changed up my mind concerning the style of music. I mean a style in which I want to create. I still love Trance and Progressive House, I still love Psy Trance and Psy Progressive music, I still visiting parties but I can’t create such music. All what inside me can be carried out only with Breaks music. I realized that my music has very narrow round of listeners since it doesn’t have ordinary strings and bass and rhythm. I grown up and accustomed to Trance sound so I want to submit such sound into the Breaks music. It is very wide style, so I can do almost everything in it, expand frameworks, mix different styles, bring very deep sound.

2.Tell us a bit about how you got involved within the Break Wind Family.
That’s simple. I pinged out through SoundCloud web form to Break Wind Productions with request to listen to my music as I had just finished my album.
Within next day Mr. Boba sent “hi” to me and said that some of stuff are fit to BWFP style and he is ready to release them.
I was really surprised by the prompt answer and warm relation from Boba, so I had assigned my tracks for Break Wind at the same moment.

3.How long have you been making music and what started your journey into the world of Breakbeat?
All have started from Dance eJay in 1999 as a funny entertainment which has grown in something big, than just get fun. Then continued in 2002 with Trance.
Only in 2011 I have started my journey into the world of Breaks.

4.Tell us a bit about yourself outside of music, hobbies, Job, things you do when not making music?
When I do not making music I’m working as a product manager at VoD service :) I also try to pay a lot of attention to my wife.
But if I have a free time, I usually try to play PC games, FPS and Actions are my favorite.
From 2006 till 2010 I was involved into making night parties (had to be CTO of the company) in Moscow with Trance DJs as Mat Zo, Daniel Kandi, Rafael Frost, Bart Claessen, etc.

5.What is in store for the future for you within music?
I don’t know really what life prepared for me for tomorrow, but hopefully I will be able to continue making groovy tracks, try different styles.
Got plans to make LIVE performance, that’s what I like the most.

6.What toys do you have in the studio and what is your weapon of Choice?
Reason 6,5, T-Racks3 for the final mastering and MIDI M-Audio Oxygen 25 for making melodies. Weapon of Choice

7.Who are your musical influences of past and who are you excited about in the present?
I have been inspired by a lot of Trance artists such as Solarstone, Airwave, AndyMoor, Yahel, John00Fleming, Hybrid, Cosmonaut.
It’s strange that all artists above are Trance guys, but if you take a look at my tracks you won’t see any significant difference between Breaks and Trance.
At the present from Breaks scene I really like what Beatman and Ludmilla is doing, Duane Barry, Under This, Trukers. These guys are really on fire.

8.Name Three breakbeat tunes that is blowing you away at the moment?
A-Mase - Destination (A-Mase's Substorm Mix)
Moshic- Emotion (Airwave remix)
Gary Delaney - The Nightmother (You are my salvation remix)

9.You can take three tracks (not albums) onto your desert island, what would they be?
Memnon – Question
Shpongle – The Seventh Revelation
Z2 I Want You (Lange Remix)

10.Which Star Wars Charecter are you most like and why?
Qui-Gon Jinn – man of honor, man of the word , solid, tough and kind.

Under This

Under This is one of the most significant Breaks band formed back in 2003 by the guys who were keen on broken rhythms from their childhood. In the beginning of their career Under This also took active participation in promoting Breaks music in their home town - Daugavpils, which culturally is a capital of Latvian Breaks scene. Being citizens of Daugavpils, guys got under strong influence of the Nu-Skool Breaks since the mid 2000s, just after their first visits to legendary night club 'Banzai', which was famous for its big Breaks events with acts from guest DJs such as General Midi, Hyper, Elite Force and Autobots to name a few.

Grown on music of The Prodigy, Chemical Brothers and other giants of electronic music scene, these guys have absorbed all the elements of banging sound to form their unique style. Blending the vibes of early 90`s Rave anthems, mid 90`s Big Beat, 70`s Disco / Funk and even 60`s Rock`n`Roll with the modern sound of Bassline and Progressive Breaks Under This are always unexpected with their musical innovations.

After their official debut release on Distinctive Records back in 2008 Under This in a wink got support from many famous DJs and producers of Breaks as well as of Trance scenes and became one of the most promising Breaks acts. Keeping their hard work and real passion to music production in the next 2 years guys signed exclusive contract with iBreaks Records. That’s became a very significant point and beginning of the fast growing career for them. After serving successful apprenticeship on iBreaks Bass since 2010, Under This have stepped up to the main iBreaks label in early 2012, already having 5 EPs reached the Top10 at Beatport in their back-catalogue.

Since that moment Under This became one of the most demanded Breaks projects. With their hits such as ‘Funqualize’ (anthem of the Summer House 2012 festival), ‘Hands On You’, ‘Stay Away’, ‘What I Need’, ‘Yestreday’, ‘Dancing Right’ and the bunch of top charted remixes, Under This firmly anchored in the leading projects of Breaks scene.
These days Under This keeping their hard work in the studio on new stuff, touring around the Europe and running their own label Expand Records (Breakspoll 2013 – Best New Label Top5 nominee). Under This music is frequently played by the DJs such as Paul Oakenfold and The Crystal Method, which shows real respect and massive attention to their production, not only by Breaks lovers, but also by major dance acts.

Disc Breaks with Llupa ft. MartOpetEr - 317 - 27th November 2014

This week on the DBS we welcome back MartOpetEr!

The man has been consistently been releasing solid originals and remixes and is a firm favourite of mine. We last had him on back in 2012 and since then his sound has only refined. This mix showcases a stack of new material about to drop, so make sure you tune in!

MartOpetEr

Hailing from Nice, France, Peter Guildoux aka MARTOPETER is one of the most promising psybreaks/tech-funk producers in the modern breaks scene. He had started making Tribal Techno/Hard Techno live sets in 2002 influenced by the Free Party movement in south of France. Around 2009, after producing some drum and bass and break’n’tech live sets, he shifted to the breakbeat sound – more specifically to the psybreaks style. He started releasing stuff back in the early 2011 and since then he never looked back.

MartOpetEr received recognition and managed to build a strong profile in the scene after releasing “Acid Rain” on VIM records and “Soldier of Sound“ on Divergence Records, both of which achieved substantial success on the charts. From then on, he had a series of top notch releases for Broken Robot Records, V.I.M. Breaks, Divergence Records, LOT49, Tek Records, In Bloom Recordings, Logariddim Records, Yellowfinger, Dirty Drops, Breakz R Boss, Sub Element Recordings and Raveart Records. MartOpetEr continues to push his powerful yet atmospheric sound to new frontiers, while gaining a considerable following in the process. As his razor sharp, chest thumping basslines consume the dancefloor, hardly anyone can resist moving their bodies to the intoxicating vibes of the psychedelic guru.

Lee Coombs and Kostas G - Kaleidoscope

'Kaleidoscope' the brand new artist album by Lee Coombs and Kostas G is finally here. This dynamic production duo first met when Kostas entered one of Lee's remix competitions. The rest is history and they have now gone on to create many tracks and remixes, ripping up dance floors and festivals from Europe to Australia to the Far East to Miami and back to Burning Man...

Lee started the year with his 'Lilly in the Sky' release on Lot49, which is now one of the biggest selling Breaks tracks of 2014. Not a bad start and things are only just getting warmed up. Kaleidoscope is a musical journey into the minds of Lee Coombs and Kostas G featuring all things Deep and Techy, a soundscape of Breaks, House and blissed out Down tempo moments designed to move your body and soul. "We wanted to make an Electronic album that you can really listen to from start to finish and lose yourself in completely, a non pretentious music lovers experience that also rocks the Dancefloor"

Disc Breaks with Llupa ft. Robosapiens - 314 - 6th November 2014

This week on the DBS we have the Robosapiens!!

Not only with an exclusive guest mix, but also an interview I did with the guys on the weekend where we talk about their new album Dystopia, the Kickstarter project to make it a reality, what's happening with Dead Famous, how they work with studios at either end of the planet, dj'ing to hippies in scary masks, big knobs and the sync button...

Linked below is their Kickstarter project - get involved and grab yourself an exclusive copy of the album before November 16.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1167446349/robosapiens-dystopia-album

Robosapiens

Hailing from Bristol UK and Brisbane Australia the Robosapien’s are Steve Kyte, Jamie Flukes and Phill Corpe. Touring the world with their DJ sets to having a grand total of over 70 releases between the three of them they are no strangers to electronic music.Originally Jamie and Steve built up the robosapiens name in the fast emerging breakbeat scene known for their love of the 303 and high energy sets.

For eight years they have also been running the independent record label Dead Famous Records (www.deadfamous.org) based in the UK putting out a string of breakbeat and techno records. Now joined by Phill Corpe, an artist in his own right as "Resistor”, the new line-up sees the guys taking their sound to the next level.

Over the last year and a half, the guys have been working on their debut album “Dystopia” due for release in early 2015.Drawing influences from all corners of the audio spectrum, bringing together elements of tech, acid, rock and a heavy chunk of breakbeat, fused together to bring you their unique brand of electronica. It’s quite evident the Robosapiens are bringing back that oldschool flavour, while incorporating a modern sound that truly proves that breakbeat is pre-eminent and on its way back to becoming the party rocker it once was.

Disc Breaks with Llupa ft. Jiro - 312 - 23rd October 2014

This week on the DBS Guest Mix I'm very happy to say we have new guy to the breakbeat block - Jiro.

The man has only recently come to my attention with his last couple of releases, but I have been nightly impressed, so asked him on the show. He has a stack of releases about to drop so the timing is perfect and this mix is a real artist showcase.

JIRO"

JIRO

DJuanma a.k.a. JIRO began his career DJ influenced by bands like Leftfield, The Prodigy, The Chemical Brothers, Aphrodite, Freestylers, Orbital... Starts in 1999 djing at underground parties organized by English collectives based in south Spain there. He grew up listening jungle, trance, garage, trip-hop, acid techno, drum&bass and of course breakbeats.

After several years play breaks on the most underground ilegal partys in Granada (south Spain) and festival like the "Dragon Fest" and "Rocket Festival" he decides start in the world of production. After a few years he is currently working with some of the best international labels like BREAKS SK, DIVERGENCE, RUNWEST, RK DEEP LOVE and many other forthcoming works.

https://soundcloud.com/jiro-breaks
https://www.facebook.com/pages/JIRO-BREAKS/201927006547484?sk=timeline&ref=page_internal

so, after 2 weeks of feeling rubbish but getting a stack of wicked new tunes I decided to do a 3 hour show, 2 from me and then the guest mix from Jiro! Big respect to Jiro for the slammin' mix made up largely of his own tunes, if you haven't head of him yet check him out - big rings I tells ya ;) my set was chocka of the new stuff and a bit of a journey from the deep and proggy, the bouncy to the techno, to the driving to the psy :)

Disc Breaks with Llupa ft. Deep Garnet Records - 311 - 16th October 2014

This week we have a epic label showcase from a label pushing the very much deeper end of breaks - Deep Garnet Records. Part of the VIM stable and also managed by superhuman Grigorios Savvidis this label focusses on the deep and more left field breaks - more for your head than for the dance floor. I've been a fan of the lane for this exact reason and so very happy to be bringing you this mix.

Greg has also put together some Deep Garnet prize packs including a CD comp, a sticker and a t-shirt - I'll have 3 to give away during the show.

Deep

Deep Garnet Records

DEEP GARNET RECORDS is the new quality V.I.M.RECORDS sub-label specialized on Deep-Breaks/Futurisitc-Breaks sound. Highly influenced by the deeper end of Breaks the label will be focused on deep n’ darkish Tech and Acid Futuristic breaks, by some of the most promising international producers, for radio airplay, home listening and early hours dj sets.

You can expect top quality deep futuristic Tech-breaks singles with awesome remixes and some of the best unique compilations of the scene. DEEP GARNET RECORDS was nominated at the TOP5 BEST NEW BREAKS LABELS @BREAKSPOLL2014!

Great mix from Deep Garnet - proper deep journey - respect to Greg for the mix! and shouts to the prize winners: Cablespaghetti, Metala and Von Drehle - your prize packs will be in the mail soon. I've been hit with a nasty tooth infection so wasn't up for playing live, instead I re-played a guest mix I did for Retroid's Revive show back in 2009 - I'll be back fighting fir next week!

Mechanical Pressure is a musical project from Ukraine that specializes on electronic music.
Being initially a drum&bass project, Mechanical Pressure followed the global tendency for dubstep and released a few EPs and one LP that concentrated on deep & dark dubstep sound.

Later, he decided to cover even more musical ground, and started experimenting with a variety of electronic genres such as
DnB, breaks, dubstep, techno and experemental electronica, etc. His music made its way to many radio stations worldwide.

Disc Breaks with Llupa ft. Sub Element Recordings - 308 - 25th September 2014

So happy to have an amazing label on the show tonight - Sub Element Recordings! Matt - the man behind the label - has put together an exclusive mix of label tunes spanning what has been released and what is coming up. This label won 'Best New Label' at Breakspoll earlier in the year - so you know this is going to be good.

Sub

Sub Element Records

Sub Element Recordings was born early 2012, with its first release coming out in December 2012. Our Aim was fairly simple. To be open minded towards signing genres, so long as each had a techy feel to it,then we would take it. We then developed this idea and tried to give each release a varied taste of genres to balance the whole release out.

We have dipped our feet into many styles such as electro breaks, tech funk, techno, but with our one true love being psy breaks, and having looked up to Broken Robot records for many years, our vision started to transform into reality after scooping the Breakspoll 2014 best new label award, and the label has gone from strength to strength from there.

Expect lots more goodness for Sub Element in the coming years.

He dropped tunes so fresh they hadn't even been named yet! this mix really shows why they won @ Breakspoll this year - epic stuff. I went tune shopping just before the show so dropped a stack of new stuff alongside some classics from Timo Mass and the Stantons.

Great show this, big mix of new and exclusive stuff I've had the honour of being sent. Shouts to the label and artists - there is so much good stuff out at the moment.

I'm on holiday for the next 3 weeks, so no DBS, but when I'm back we'll be having both Sub Element Recordings and then Vandal - epic!

Disc Breaks with Arklove & EZ Breaks - 304 - 14th August 2014 - 2

Re:posted as iTunes didn't pick up the original post...

This week we're heading back to the East with a guest mix from Arklove & Ez Breaks! These guys have been putting out some solid tunes both as themselves but also through their label RKdeeplove. They are not shy from exploring different sounds, which gives them major kudos from me - you just have to check their latest release Mechanical Pressure - Saloon Heartbreaker [RKdeeplove] to hear something a little less ordinary. This mix not only showcases the label, but also them as very good artists in their own right.

Disc Breaks with Mesmer - 302 - 31st July 2014

This week on the DBS we have an entire show take over by none other than Mesmer!

Yep, the man has done an exclusive 2 hour mix just for the show and it is awesome. So this is a proper take-over show - make you tune in for this as it's pretty special...

The Element

Mesmer

Mesmer (Prague, Czech Republic / Bucharest, Romania)Mesmer started producing breaks back in 2006 and has been building up an international following ever since with his energetic yet deep and lush easily recognizable style and amazing production skills.Hailing from Bucharest, Romania, Mesmer has quickly become known as one of the finest producers the country has to offer and has had support from many of the biggest names around: Annie Nightingale on Radio One, Jay Cunning on Kiss FM, Matt Darey's “Nocturnal” and many more.As of 2009 as well as producing stomping tunes and remixes for many of the scene's biggest labels such as Sound of Habib, Dead Famous, Dusted Breaks, Re:connect, etc,

Mesmer has launched his own label Scarcity. With an eclectic view, Scarcity drops mainly breaks and sometimes even tech-house, dubstep and drum and bass tracks for the dance floors worldwide while maintaining a catalogue of productions that sets a standard of quality. If you like your beats dipped in lush melodies, acidic hooks and thunderous basslines, then this is a label worthy of your attention. Scarcity has quickly become one of the most consistent labels around today and won the "Best New Label" category at the biggest international breakbeat awards Breakspoll in 2011 held in London, UK.

Mesmer's productions continue to gather support and top the charts around the scene while Scarcity has been gathering pace with every release. He is now recognised as being the breakbeat pioneer in Romania, managing to create his own recognisable style of breaks. Whether you want a remix, an original track, an amazing label or a top class international dj, Mesmer provides!

There are not many people that I would hand over the reigns of an entire DBS show to - Mesmer is one of those people and this show is why. Such a great and solid journey: the deep, the driving, the bounce, the epic, the classic, the exclusive - all damn, damn good and mixed with such a solid flow. Respect mate!

Disc Breaks with Llupa ft. The Element - 301 - 24th July 2014

After last weeks 300th extravaganza, we're back to normal operation and settling into another 300 shows... This week we have a great guest mix from somebody I've been a fan of for a while - The Element! I first met Laurent through the DBS and he shared some tunes and tracks with me - all of which were on the much deeper more melodic tip. Since then he's released quite a few solid tunes and remixes and it's great to have him on the show.

The Element

The Element

Originally from Marseille, I started listening breaks in 2002 when I was living in Paris. While there I met a good friend who was mixing breaks, some PMT, Hybrid, Future Sound Of London and I instantly fell in love with this deeper more progressive style of breaks. One of my other good friends was working in a great vinyl shop in Paris and so I started following labels like Electrofly, Sinister, EQ, Mob and Disuyé and was hooked. I really like the deeper mid-tempo breaks which is a great alternative on the dance floor and can give such a great deep and heavy energy. I started mixing breaks in 2004 and start producing music at the roughly same time. Since then I've had music out on ESR , Base Industry Records, Suffused Music and Funk Lab Record.

Damn, that guest mix from The Element was amazing... proper deep journey. So happy to have him on the show, big respect mate, that was quality! I had a cracking headache so didn't play live, instead I played the mix I did as part of the Festival Of Friends that happened over 3 days last weekend. It's the first 60 mins of the entire 90, so I'll be posting up the full version shortly. I did this on a Friday night after an afternoon of beers so it's a little loose... ;)

Disc Breaks with Llupa - 300 - 20th July 2014

Wow, what a show!! Big thanks to everybody who sent in a request, this was the first show where every single tune was a request - all 4 hours of it! I was a little apprehensive about doing a show entirely of requests from lots of different people but I must say, you all have amazing taste and the flow worked pretty damn well.

Big shouts to the DBS300 contributors: The Snooze, Artem Ivanov, Resonant Status, Zoltan Miko, Jerez J. Gyula, Von Drehle, Glenn Black, Stuart Gunnis, Chaz, Raincry, Dark Ronin, Celesao, Tony Coma, Kelvin Richardson, Kreezy, Art Clandestine, Andy Faze, DJ Marty B, Kat Coady, C-Row, James Marston, Tom Clyde, Cafeman, Elwin Buisman, Yreane, Kakapo, VJ Kammi, Retrograde, Roboteknic, Deeply Unexpected, Calxtra, Oleg Amossenkov and Misses Llupa

And an epic shout to Deeply Unexpected for doing the graf piece that features as the art for this show. The man did this over 2 days and it sits just off the port of Thessaloniki in Greece. It took him 2 days and I was blown away by this when he sent it through - massive respect mate, you are awesome.

enjoy!
